Lenten Reflection: Day 20

Gospel, John 2:13-25

The book of James in chapter 1, verse 19 reads, “So then my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” By this scripture we are called to be prudent in our thoughts, words and deeds, while expressing an emotion that’s common to every person. Anger. What or who might make a child angry may be different from what angers an adult but both young and old most often express anger with aggression. Aggression according to Anderson and Bushman (Department of Psychology, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa) is “any behaviour directed toward another individual that is carried out with the proximate (immediate) intent to cause harm. In addition, the perpetrator must believe the behaviour will cause harm and that the target is motivated to avoid the behaviour.”

chbiblepic

Today’s Gospel depicts Jesus in aggression. Or does it? Seeing at what the people have done to His Father’s house, Jesus not only expresses outrage against corruption of the Temple’s sanctity but also gives a very strong animated message against using The Temple to nurture ‘commercial market’ attitude and nuances. Merchants do business to make profit. If there is not profit then it is not good business. To do business in the enclosure of a place of worship is a smart business move to attract a captive audience, promote merchandise by persuasion with religious connotations and trap naïve minds into pleasing God with ‘quality merchandise’ or ‘preferred merchandiser’. Jesus is cold towards such sacrilegious and fiscal nature of the mind towards spirituality and service in the God’s kingdom. His anger towards what He being done in His Father’s house, is rightly described as “I am eaten up with zeal for your house.” The zeal for internal and external sanctity is a must to understand true worship of God.

piety

1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are the temples of The Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” To understand Jesus’ anger at The Temple, we need to relate this Temple with our bodily temple which is the dwelling house of the Spirit of God. Adorning it worldly beauty and attraction will slowly but steadily drown is in the abyss of commercial worldliness and finally make us forget the very nature of its creation which is to be an abode of sanctity and love. Just like by corrupting The Temple with their buying & selling of goods, the merchandisers exemplify how we in a way mutilate holiness, peace, righteousness from our body and spirit by cultivating a worldly attitude towards our bodies.

By the death of Christ, we have been ransomed by blood. By His resurrection, we have been made new (creation). As The Temple of God (The Church) is the house of the living presence of God, our body too is the house of the same living presence of God. Just like Jesus could not stand such corruption and dealings which had no ‘business’ in His Father’s, we who are His branches, members of His body, should be enlightened by The Word and Tradition to scrap out, drive out and wash out every such thing or being which is from the Evil one and has no business dwelling in us.

Come home to The Father

Lenten Reflection: Day 19

Gospel, Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

Free will is one of the most astounding aspects of the human existence. “God created man a rational being, conferring on him the dignity of a person who can initiate and control his own actions. God willed that man should be ‘left in the hand of his own consul,’ so that he might of his own accord seek his Creator and freely attain his full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him. Man is rational and therefore like God; he is created with free will and is master over his acts.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, Para 1730. The choice between good and evil is ultimately leading us to freely and ‘consciously’ desire and work towards attaining God (for He is the ultimate treasure the human soul desires), as well as ensure our eternity of holiness, joy and peace in His Kingdom.

Comedy and tragedy theatre masks

The Father of all creation, He who is Omniscient, created the world with the sole desire of giving man everything that satisfies his body and soul. Every atom and essence of His creation was brought into being to be submissive to the ‘care’ of Man. So, the account of Genesis clearly portrays the ‘image’ of God to be generous and selflessly loving towards man, whom He created in the same image; which includes being as generous and selflessly loving as He is. Man has to constantly realise that he belongs to this Eternal Father. The Father gives everything, including that which Man is yet unaware off; for the wellbeing of his life on earth and after death. Before The Fall, man did not have to ask for anything from The Father, but after, Man is constantly in the ‘need’ of God’s mercy and graciousness.

cage of sin

The effect of the Original Sin therefore; cages us into such captivity of unrighteousness that the effects of this imprisonment to sin; corrupts free will beyond measure and nurtures the desire of resentment and rejection of God, making the soul vulnerable even to eternal death. This is where a very radiant and unfathomable treasure of the Will of God is manifested in human life on earth as well as in that of righteous souls who are in the realm of complete purification after death (purgatory). This treasure of God is His Divine Mercy. The ‘Khabodh Yahweh’ (weightiness of God) rests on the throne of Mercy. His mercy is beyond measure and human reasoning, and it is the Will of His benevolent love that He desires to embrace anyone; I reiterate, anyone, who is willing to reject his loitering in sin and hatred, and with a contrite heart truly desires The Father’s forgiveness. And because the very nature of God’s mercy is to be eternally forgiving, so every sincere penitent, irrespective of the gravity of the sin, will taste heaven’s peace as well as have a tangible experience of God’s loving and welcoming embrace, here on earth as well.

Giovanni-Battista-Benci-The-Return-of-the-Prodigal-Son-1625-50

Let us therefore, turn away from anything and any person who might pave way to our eternal damnation. Let us turn back to God and His mercy, for that paves the path to be soaked in His eternal love and joy, and causes all of heaven to rejoice at such a home coming.

Be responsible caretakers

Lenten Reflection: Day 17

Gospel, Matthew 21:33-43; 45-46

The Kingdom of Heaven was conceived as the most unutterable and hallowed thought in the heart and mind of God. It was manifested most creatively and munificently in every visible and invisible substance and spirit created by God. This creation was like the ultimate vineyard which bore the fruit of immeasurable love and joy. Peace in this vineyard was not a realm or virtue to be sort. This realm that God gifted to man and let him have dominion over it, was hand-made by God, therefore it carried the image of Himself and one of the essence of this image is peace. So, peace was a given, and man lived oblivious to fear, worry, anxiety or want. Everything was given unto him and every creature submitted to him. God was the eternal caretaker of this vineyard, bestowing upon it His eternal countenance. God did not just leave it at this. He entrusted the responsibility of flourishing this vineyard in the hands of Adam and Eve. But fooled by the vice of Satan, the vineyard was stricken by great upheaval, the consequence of which changed the course of ‘all creation’.

eden

In today’s Gospel Jesus in His another parable, speaks of also of a vineyard. The owner of which let tenants care for it and cultivate it to bear much fruit, so that when the time comes to receive his just returns (fruit of the winepress), he will obtain it as well as find the vineyard well taken care off. However, the parable shows that all those who were sent by the landlord to collect the produce, were beaten up, stoned and killed. They did not spare even the landlord’s son. He too was killed. So, the landlord brought an ‘end’ (terminate evil) and gave the vineyard to those tenants who would be virtuous and sincerely accountable in their ‘business’ with the landlord. God as well, gave us a winepress – Jesus, He made us His branches. But the Evil One is constantly devouring this winepress and causing much harm and suffering. Thos who are called by The Lord to care and cultivate the culture of life in the winepress are beaten and killed. ‘The Son’ wasn’t spared either.

parable

Therefore my friends, as we, in baptism, we are called to be caretakers of our lives and the world in which we live in. This life and the universe (not just the known world) are given to us by the eternal owner of it all, God. We are accountable to be righteous and just caretakers. We are liable to our carelessness and mishandling. We are answerable to Him when He asks of our produce (words and deeds of kindness, love and mercy).

If we continue to persecute those who strive hard to bring The Good News, serve the least among the people, spread peace and love, so-much-so that we do not even hesitate to kill Christ every day, either in the person of others who bear Him or by words and deeds of sacrilege towards sacraments and sacramental, then we are as good as those tenants who upon whom the wrath of the landlord will fall unceasingly, taking away everything that was given to them, and given to those whom God will hand pick according to their righteousness and obedience to His guidance and expectation.

Lenten Reflection: Day 16

Gospel, Luke 16:19-31

In the 50,000 words statement made by Pope Francis in November 2014, the 266th successor of St. Peter shook the world’s conscience by this authoritative writing which categorically defines that the “idolatry of money” in secular culture of the world would lead to “a new tyranny.” Michael Sean Winters, who is a fellow at Catholic University’s Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies, in his comments to the Holy Father’s statement said, “There’s no way a Catholic who is a serious intellectual can ever again not address the issue of income inequality, of the structural sins of our economic system. This is so front and center…This is a pastor’s voice. He’s saying, ‘If we’re serious Christians, we need to be knee-deep in this stuff.” Global inequality according to Pope Francis is by the belief is ‘trickle down theories’ which assume that economic growth encouraged by free market, will undoubtedly result in greater justice and inclusiveness in the world.

HomelessJesus2

The inspired writing of the Evangelist Luke in today’s Gospel, at first seems like a case of rich and poor, inequality and disregarding of the marginalized. However, the wisdom of the Catholic Church teaches us that in this astounding parable of Jesus, the rich man is symbolic to the Jewish people and the poor man Lazarus is figurative to the simple and humble Church; who according to Pope Benedict XVI, is seen as doubting and sinful, but yet being reconciled with God by Christ Jesus. The wisdom of God was expected to dwell and be alive in the heart, mind and life of the Jews – the ancient people of Yahweh. This nourishment of Divine wisdom also provided sustenance to those gentiles who pursued truth and salvation. The crumbs falling off the table of the ‘Chosen People’ (the Jews) are figurative to the wisdom that the gentiles caught on to and opened the closed doors of their hearts and minds for The Light. This Light who is Christ Himself – Light to the Gentiles.

Gustave_Dore_Lazarus_and_the_Rich_Man

There are certain aspects of the human soul and eternity which are uncompromising. The Word of God and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is clear about Heaven being the eternal and most holy dwelling of God, His angels and saints. Hell being the realm of eternal and most tumultuous suffering and hatred. Purgatory being the realm of merciful sanctification, much needed to be members of the triumphant Church – Heaven. This parable of the rich man and Lazarus should not be perceived literally for an understanding of the essence of the human person/soul in hell, heaven, or the ‘great gulf’ that is described as the parting between these two super natural realms.

My dear friends, what is to be contemplated and understood; is whether or not we are kind and open enough to welcome the bearers of truth (especially Jesus who is Truth in person), wisdom and love. Whether or not we are sharing our abundance (worldly inheritance and spiritual bounty) with those who seek to grow in the love and wisdom of The Lord Most High. And whether or not we are making every effort to ensure that as many as possible join us in righteous pursuit of God and dwelling with Him in heaven for all eternity.

The Father chooses our place in heaven

Lenten Reflection: Day 15

Gospel, Matthew 20:17-28

Today’s Gospel reading, I believe, begins with the description of something very profound in the life of Jesus that is expected to resonate full throttle in the life of every sincere Christian. Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the road he huddled up with His chosen twelve friends and said, “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem.” Throughout His ministry and even while He was a child (refer to the instance in the Temple where Jesus was found discussing Scripture with Rabbis), Jesus has showered words of indescribable wisdom. Among the ocean of this Divine wisdom, this sentence; “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem”, has a timeless connotation to every generation that lives here on earth, waiting upon the Kingdom of God. Christ is alive and He reigns over the known and unknown creation of God, from heaven, seated at the right hand of His Father. He is alive in the life of every Christian who has received Him in baptism, as well as in all men of good will.

the-bible-jesus-and-disciples

In the journey of life of these people who seek the eternal company of God, Jesus draws them aside during the passage, then to some who are new to a personal relationship with Him; He reveals, and to those who have been receiving His nourishment for some time now, He reminds, that we are all headed to the (New) Jerusalem which is heaven. The dwelling place of immaculate holiness, joy and unity. It is important and necessary for each one of us Christians and people of good will, to recess in our journey at the behest of Jesus, to let Him call to our mind where we are headed. It is surely possible that even though we are heading towards Him and His/our eternal dwelling place, we might get overwhelmed by the journey (pilgrimage) and by its experiences. There is every chance of us forgetting about the true and original meaning of what heaven (New Jerusalem) is all about, and why we should strive to journey towards it as our final destination.

109___desert_journey_by_e_will-d3jkobr

This journey reflects the very same characteristics that Christ’s journey here on earth revealed. He continues to say, “and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised up again.” Numerous sons and daughters of Jesus, from time immemorial, have experienced countless, terrifying, as well as inhumane persecution for His name sake. Just like Jesus was persecuted and finally given-up to be crucified, by His own people, like wise many fall victim to the vice & evil of their own people (fellow Christians), and others to the hateful sting of many non-believers. Nevertheless, just like Jesus rose from the dead by His own will and power (for He is truly God and truly Man), His resurrection also assures our rising from the dead and joining Him in heaven for life eternal.

5161422017_c86cfcc47c_z2

The presence of Jesus along the journey can be so enticing and incredible to some, that they would expect themselves or their kin to be always close to Jesus’ side in His dwelling place. In other words they would still look at the ‘company’ of Jesus as something within the realm of space and matter. They forget that everyone has a ‘place’ in God’s Kingdom, and there is no possibility of reserving a physical place next to and close to or around God. Each one’s place is already destined by The Father. Jesus assures us of this just like He did to the mother of Zebedee’s sons. We may partake in His suffering, death and resurrection, but The Father in Heaven who is the author of everything good, He alone has the authority to draw us to Him and let us live with Him, placing us wherever He chooses. Expectations, such as what Zebedee’s wife had, are evident even now among people. And such expectations create jealousy and disharmony in the body of Christ (The Church).

Therefore my friends, let this Lent draw us to learn from Christ’s example of servitude, which inspires heavenly blessings to radiate in our day-to-day life and may we, by His example and the example of countless holy martyrs of Christ, be ready to sacrifice ourselves for the good of others, even unto death. Amen.
